With the XE, Jaguar set out to build a compact sports sedan that could rival the world's best in terms of design, luxury, and driving dynamics. However, consumers were making a definitive shift toward SUVs by the time the Jaguar XE arrived in the U.S. market for the 2017 model year. In addition, the XE was small by class standards, offering little rear passenger room and a small trunk. During the XE's four-year run, Jaguar added a new 296-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, introduced somewhat confusing model names loosely related to powertrain offerings, revised the styling, and added new technology. Unfortunately, the XE struggled to find buyers, and Jaguar dropped the car from its U.S. lineup after the 2020 model year.
